Superheros of the Earth

Product Line

ÞYKJÓ's first costume collection in development for children.

Can you fly? Change colour? Disappear swiftly into a shell? Superheros of the Earth is an eco-friendly costume collection for children, combining textile-, toy- and experiential design. The collection is an ode to the wonders of the wild animal kingdom as well as the wilderness of our imagination.

The collection is aimed at age 3 - 8, when make-believe and free play is essential to the cognative development of children. Our designs aim to pique children’s interest in animal diversity and we work with gender- neutral characters. To create the costumes, ÞYKJÓ consults with paediatricians, biologists, and—most importantly—children.

ÞYKJÓ is committed to eco-conscious design that encourages environmental awareness. Costumes are inspired by animals from various ecosystems as a way to spark children’s curiosity in the world around us. The costumes are tailored to grow with the child, carefully crafted to last.

Wherever possible, we reuse the textile industry’s scrap materials through rescue of leftover stock and cut-offs. We collaborate with local textile companies including Seglagerðin Ægir, Burstagerðin, Hampiðjan and Rauði Krossinn. Materials are chosen based on textures and how they stimulate the sense of touch, as well as how the textiles move and encourage children to move with them whilst playing, developing a sense of balance.

Lovebird

Lovebird is inspired by the vibrant colours of peacocks, birds of paradise and cranes. The Lovebird is joyful, energetic, and loving — a symbol for when we feel outgoing or extroverted. This costume encourages children to swing their arms, wag their head, find the magic in fluid movements - but also to stay silly with the comical bird feet.

Shell

The Shell is a beautiful symbol for when we are introverted, when we just want to hide or be alone in peace and quiet. The Shell is inspired by turtles, snails, and crabs, and it’s superhero power is to quickly disappear into it’s shell. The Shell is also a symbol for those who travel with their house on their back, for someone who is self-sufficient and can feel at home anywhere in the world.
