Tulipopland
Play Area

Tulipopland is the new kid on the block at Keflavík Airport—a playground dreamt up by the minds at ÞYKJÓ and Tulipop.
The mission? Craft a play space as tough and resilient as an outdoor park, yet with the magic of an immersive world from wall to wall. Walls and floors meld into one seamless adventure land, so you really feel like you’ve stepped into a storybook universe.
The ÞYKJÓ designers put on their play-time goggles, exploring every nook and cranny to spark imagination and set the seeds for all kinds of play. The main objective: quality, screen-free moments that fire up kids’ creativity and joy—no charger required.
Mushroom Swamp
The playground draws its inspiration from the Mushroom Swamp on Tulipop Island. The ÞYKJÓ designers specifically picked this spot because, in the Tulipop world, it doesn’t belong to any one character. It becomes a shared playground for every child passing through Keflavík, wherever their plane ticket says they’re headed.
This dazzling purple swamp, wrapped in yellow cliffs, was also chosen for its visual flair: the color palette is pure eye candy, and three domes, the three moons floating above Tulipop island, hang over the area. This zone helps KEF stand out as the family-friendly stopover: it’s one-of-a-kind and nothing like your run-of-the-mill playgrounds elsewhere.

Room to Play
Tulipopland is all about giving kids a safe place to burn off energy before they’re buckled in for takeoff. The dreamy blue pools dotted around the landscape invite kids to dive into the time-honored game of “floor is lava”—one of those rare classics that grabs every age group. The playground’s spirit calls to every curious explorer (and let’s be honest, that’s every kid gearing up for their next adventure): hop from hummock to mushroom, leap across stepping stones, climb up a mountain, zoom down the other side, and wriggle through hidden tunnels. These are the kinds of games that hone balance, quick coordination, and blithe bravery—and there's always room for a buddy or three to join the fun.

The Wallpaper
Another gentler game is hidden in the wallpaper that hugs the play area with soft, arching lines, uniquely illustrated by Signý Kolbeinsdóttir for this space. In between bushes and mushrooms, you’ll find all sorts of hidden creatures and plants to spot and count—a game that doesn’t need any words. Globally, kids know it as “I spy with my little eye,” a bonding game for youngsters and parents. It’s all about eagle-eyed observation, counting, and picking up those small details—and it also sharpens a child’s eye for two- and three-dimensional shapes. Play—and learning—hidden in plain sight.
